About Flag Identifier (Flagid)
Flag Identifier is a comprehensive web tool for identifying flags regardless of usage, geographic origin, or historical background. It features an extensive database of relevant facts about flags from around the world.
The project has evolved through several versions:
- First version: Created in 2003
- Second version: Developed during 2006
- Third version: Launched on October 30, 2020
- Current version: Major upgrade completed in December 2025
As of today, the database contains over 1360 flags with comprehensive filtering capabilities and detailed vexillological information.
Data Sources
Flag data and images are collected with permission from the following sources:
- Flags of the World (FOTW) website - the primary source for flag images and descriptions
- Vexillologic literature and academic publications
- Contributions from vexillology experts and enthusiasts worldwide
The database contents are carefully maintained by Flagid editors to ensure accuracy and completeness.
Features
Flag Identifier offers advanced filtering capabilities organized into two main categories:
Visual & Descriptive Criteria
- Colors: Filter by FIAV color taxonomy (including parent-child color relationships)
- Shapes: Search by flag shape (rectangular, square, triangular, etc.) and its proportions
- Divisions: Find flags by field divisions (horizontal, vertical, diagonal, cross, etc.)
- Elements: Filter by design elements and charges (shapes, animals, symbols, etc.)
Factual Criteria
- Geography: Filter by continent, region, or specific country/territory
- Vexilliger (The owner or holder of a flag): Search by entity that owns or is entitled to the flag (country, subdivision, organization, military rank etc.)
- Usage: Find flags by usage (national, civil, military, naval, etc.)
- Historical Dates: Temporal filtering by specific date, month, or year to see flags active during that time
Advanced Features
- Smart Filtering: Hierarchical taxonomies with parent-child relationships for precise searches
- Combined Queries: Mix visual and factual criteria for complex searches
- URL Sharing: Direct links to filtered flag charts for easy reference and collaboration
